Sustainable Halophyte Utilisation in the Mediterranean and Subtropical Dry Regions
EU-sponsored Concerted Action, coordinated by Prof. Dr. Helmut Lieth
Project Objectives
- Demonstration of the feasibility of seawater irrigation cropping systems
- Collection and dissemination of all information needed to maintain and utilise halophytic plants and ecosystems in ecologically different environments
- Developing a quick check for the salinity tolerance of halophytic plants
- Testing seawater irrigated systems in different climates
- Demonstration of the feasibility of seawater irrigated ecosystems for landscape management, agriculture, horticulture
- Greenification of housing areas, wasteland and roadsides, roof greenification, sand dune stabilisation
Ecophysiological Research on Halophytes
Plantation of halophytes for ecophysiological studies:
- To install plant growth containers for salt tolerant species in a greenhouse
- To investigate plant growth at various salinity levels
- To study the main parameters of photosynthesis on different halophytes at various salinity
- To measure stomatal conductance at various salinity
